Timing is everything

In the play we are rehearsing right now, one of Opals monologues (and bless Cathy's heart, there are a bunch of them!) everything happens when it's supposed to happen. That's kinda happening right now for us.

A couple months ago my friend Cassie found the perfect dairy cow for us. She has Bluebell at her house waiting to come home. She outright bought it and we are doing trade work to pay her off.

Then a couple weeks ago someone posted 5 Kune Kune pigs on a site and I asked about them. The price was too good to pass up, so I said I would take them. Caty and I are going Saturday to pick them up and ho boy.... That's going to be an adventure, stay tuned.

Then.... While talking to another customer about her pigs, she said she had a very friendly black Angus for sale and Bluebell the milk cow is going to need a pasture mate... She is willing to take tradework for her. So now we are getting a black Angus named Fancy on Sunday.

We will be able to breed both at the same time and will end up with enough babies to fill the freezer for the 9 of us.

I have been wanting livestock for years. I want to raise our own meat, I want to raise our dairy and eggs. And bam. All at once we are getting what we need to make that happen! I guess this is the time it was supposed to happen.

Say hello to Lulu, Rueben, Chunky, Gigi and Zsa Zsa! We are converting an old chicken coop for their home temporarily but the goal is to use movable hotwire to rotate them through pasture. In a year or so we will breed the females and I will have babies to sell and we will raise a few out for ourselves.

Just piggie cuteness overload. Rueben always looks like he's smiling with his little teefers showing!

Have I told y'all Iove having pigs. (As long as I have an enclosure that's strong enough to keep them!) This surprises me. I grew up across the road from a pig farm. Ugh the smell. But pigs, if given proper room, don't smell like a pig farm. They are smart, funny, friendly animals with so much personality. I'm excited about getting pigs!

This breed of pig is supposed to have incredible meat and tons of fat to render into lard. Haven't decided how many pigs we will need to feed us all yet... Probably 4-5 a year. I'm going to have 4 females producing 8 babies... Lol we haven't figured out how we will get rid of the pigs we don't need. There are options, sell babies for others to raise or raise them and sell them at butcher weight! The goal is that what I sell offsets the price of what I put in the freezer.

My plans for the day...

-Take a nap. I woke up at 2 and couldnt get back to sleep.

-Rehearse lines. I'm struggling with act 2!

-start making the pig pen

-bake a cake. I need to start making and photographing the baked goods I want to offer.
